What Information Is Collected?
At Heroesofcharacter.org, it's our policy to create website content that requires minimum collection of information from our visitors. To create an account, kids are asked to provide limited personally identifiable information (e.g. kid's email address and/or email address of parent or third party), as explained below, in order to conduct online activities (e.g. blog commenting, games). Heroesofcharacter.org does not condition a kid's participation in any of our online activities on the disclosure of more information than is reasonably necessary to participate in the activity. Additionally, Heroesofcharacter.org generally limits our collection of information from kids to what is known as non-personally identifiable information (e.g. username, birthday and gender). This information is collected so kids can participate in activities (e.g. post messages, play online games) without giving unnecessary personal information.
Games
Some games on Heroesofcharacter.org require cookies to function properly. Cookies are small text files that are stored on a user's computer and allow websites to "remember" information about users. Heroesofcharacter.org games may use cookies to "remember" a user's progress through a game. We do not store any personal information in these cookies. You can choose to remove cookies through your browser options. However, if you do so, your ability to use some online games will be limited.
Some games require non-personally identifiable information such as a username and password in order to generate high score tables. This non-personally identifiable information is stored on servers housed at the National Liberty Museum and cannot be accessed by those outside of the museum.
My Hero of Character
Heroesofcharacter.org My Hero of Character is a safe environment that allows kids to save progress on the website and personalize their own screens on the Heroesofcharacter.org servers, select and bookmark favorite Heroesofcharacter.org assets, and view activities from a past museum visit. It is our policy to collect only information (such as username, password, email address, birthday, gender and parent's or guardian's email address) that is necessary to participate in My Hero of Character. When a child is under the age of 13, we use the provided parent's or guardian's email address in order to send an email notifying the recipient that his or her child has created a My Hero of Character account and informing them of their child's username and password. We do not use the parent's or guardian's email address for any other purpose.
If you have any questions about My Hero of Character or your child's account, please contact info@heroesofcharacter.org.
Blogs
The Heroesofcharacter.org Blog allows children to share their unique thoughts and experiences online with other children. Visitors to the Heroesofcharacter.org blogs can make comments on what they have read in the blogs if they register and log in with a valid username and password. These comments are also monitored by, and may be edited by, the Heroesofcharacter.org staff.
It is our policy to collect only information (such as username, password, email address, birthday, gender and parent's or guardian's email address) that is necessary to participate in the comment section of the Kids Blogs. We use the provided parent's or guardian's email address in order to send an email notifying the recipient that his or her child has created an account and informing the recipient of the child's username and password. We do not use the parent's or guardian's email address for any other purpose.
If you have any questions about Blogs or your child's account, please contact info@heroesofcharacter.org.
Sweepstakes and Contests
Heroesofcharacter.org occasionally offers contests and sweepstakes, which may be entered online. To participate in a contest or sweepstakes, a child is asked to provide his or her first name and email address. Sometimes, when we conduct contests or sweepstakes that may involve more than a one-time contact, we ask additionally for the email address of his or her parent. In such types of contests or sweepstakes, we send the child's parent an email within two business days informing him or her of the child's entry and give the parent the option to have the child's entry deleted. All the information collected by Heroesofcharacter.org is securely maintained and used only for the purpose of conducting the contest or sweepstakes.
If a child participates in a kids sweepstakes or contest, we will retain his or her email address for the duration of the contest until a winner is chosen. The winner will be notified by email or another method, as described in the rules. After the contest all participants' email addresses will be deleted from our system. We will not use email addresses in any other way, and we will not provide them to any third party.
U.S. federal law prohibits us from requiring kids to give any more personal information than is necessary to participate in a given activity.
Electronic Newsletter Subscription
Heroesofcharacter.org offers kids the opportunity to sign up to receive the Heroesofcharacter.org newsletter by email. When a kid asks to receive our email newsletter, the child is asked to provide his or her email address. At any time, the child's parent has the opportunity to exercise the option to request that we stop sending the child the Heroesofcharacter.org newsletter and have the child's information removed from our Heroesofcharacter.org.
Use and Disclosure of Information
Heroesofcharacter.org may use limited personally identifiable information that kids provide for such purposes as sending requested electronic postcards and email messages on their behalf, and conducting contests or sweepstakes, and responding to their questions regarding our services. Heroesofcharacter.org currently does not disclose to third parties personally identifiable information that kids provide. Personally identifiable information will only be disclosed to third parties in order to comply with law or requests by law enforcement agencies, to enforce our Terms of Use or to protect the rights, property or safety of our website, users of our website and others.
Cookies and Log Data
Cookies are information files that your web browser places on the hard drive of your computer when you visit a website. Cookies cannot damage user files, nor can they read information from a user's hard drive. Cookies allow websites to "remember" users' activities on a website as well as users visits to a site. At Heroesofcharacter.org, cookies are used to determine the number of unique visitors to our website over a given period and to remember usernames so that the need for multiple log-ins is eliminated. We do not store any personal information into cookies nor do we link or combine information collected through cookies to any personal information that kids submit online when participating in our activities. You can, of course, disable cookies on your computer by indicating this in the preferences or options menus in your browser.
